Youth Development Programs in Terrigal SLSC
Youth Activities
Terrigal Surf Life Saving Club is proud of the commitment and dedication of our youth members. They are a vital part of the long term development of surf life saving and provide many valuable services to Terrigal.
There are a number of opportunities for the youth of Terrigal to learn and develop a wide variety of skills, have many fantastic experiences and most of all, have a whole lot of fun!
Youth Committee
The Youth Committee is a fun forum for the expression of youth ideas and a great way for the youth members of Terrigal to interact while contributing to the general running of the club and it’s development.

TROYS – Terrigal Retention of Youth Scheme
What is TROYs?This program was set up in 2003 to allow younger members (aged 13-20yrs) to become more involved in the running of Terrigal surf club, for their own satisfaction and as a development pathway for the future leaders of our club.
TROYs simply provides the opportunity for young people to participate in various activities of their own choice within the club, with the support of a mentor if wanted. The aim is to work towards achieving further qualifications, such as Coaching or Officiating certificates when the participant’s age permits.
TROYs Awards
Level 1 – participants must complete 25 hours (above normal patrol responsibilities) to the club in at least 3 or the 8 components listed below.
Level 2 – the commitment is 30 hours
Level 3 – 40 hours of extra commitment
Components of TROYs
- coaching or instruction
- officiating
- administration
- event management
- fundraising
- carnival set up and close down
- additional patrolling duties
Each participant chooses their own areas of commitment and the time is accumulated over the entire year so it is very achievable. It’s a great opportunity to explore other areas of interest in surf life saving and test your own potential.
How do I get involved in TROYs?
Contact the Member Services Director through the club office.
Duke of Edinburgh SchemeThe Duke of Edinburgh's Award is an international leadership in action programme, available to all young people aged between 14 and 25.
Being voluntary, flexible, non-competitive, balanced, progressive, challenging and most of all enjoyable, it provides an opportunity for young people to achieve personal excellence and build self-esteem, self-confidence, self-reliance, self-motivation and respect for others via their involvement in service, skill, physical recreation and expedition activities.

How does the Duke program work in Terrigal Surf Life Saving Club?
DofE has been adopted by Surf Life Saving as an excellent way to develop our young members, both personally and in skill achievement.
The four components of the DofE program; service, skill, physical recreation and expeditions are achievable though participation in Terrigal Surf Club. Each life saving award, patrol and training program gets participants closer to the achievement of one of the levels of the Duke of Edinburgh scheme; bronze, silver or gold.

Westfield Rookie Lifesaver Program
The Westfield Rookie Lifesaver Program was introduced into Surf Life Saving Central Coast during the 1993/ 1994 season, developed to assist with the education and retention of our 12 - 14 year old members through a structured development program. The Rookie Lifesaver Program is aimed at developing our future lifesavers in the areas of surf education, beach management and related career paths within the surf life saving movement.
The Rookie Lifesaver Program has been developed to incorporate junior members into the patrolling environment. It is not an extension of the Junior Activities program.
Aims of the Rookie Lifesaver Program
- Develop the surf lifesaving skills of young members
- Provide a transition between nipper and senior lifesaving
- Provide a structured career path in surf lifesaving
- Provide a smooth transition and ready flow of active members from junior ranks by providing a program of practical lifesaving development.
- Involve and encourage respective Parents to become involved in both active service and administration at club level.
- Develop strong ties between Senior and Junior Members as a result of involvement in this program.
- Club patrols will become more efficient as patrol members become involved with the development of juniors whilst on patrol.
